Designer Impostor: A High Fashion Look from the Marc Jacobs Runway - Makeup and Beauty Blog

Today EV of Almost Daily Inspiration shares a wild runway look inspired by Francois Nars.

Howdy, folks! I thought I'd endeavor something a little unlike for y'all all and offer up a tutorial for my version of a wild runway look created by Francois Nars. It's non exactly what y'all'd call "work appropriate," but as Nars himself said, "You desire to play with makeup." So let's have some fun, shall we?

Get-go, a little background. Allow me to take you back to Feb's Fall 2009 New York Fashion Week. Sure, well-nigh of the clothes were wearisome (thanks, recession-inspired conservatism!), just the makeup was consistently incredible: grey lips, tearing smoky eyes, and splashes of neon all fabricated an advent. And the absolute biggest, juiciest dazzler story of the week was Francois Nars' render to the track subsequently 10 years. He was lured back by none other than the wildly artistic Marc Jacobs (he of the blueish hair and the human skirts and the in-your-face up attitude) and his collection of '80s gild-kid clothes. Nars was then inspired, in fact, that he took on the challenge of designing individual looks for all threescore models in the prove. Wow.

Each wait started with a bold black eye shape, which was and so paired with a splash of whatever color he felt would best bring out the model'south features. Bank check it out:

Such simple shapes and colors however with a major affect. While purusing the show's gallery on style.com (which I highly recommend doing, past the fashion), I found myself totally fixated on this cherry, orange, and black exaggerated cat eye.

Of grade I had to attempt it on, and then this is the basic look we'll be working from for the tutorial.

  • Dior Iconic Mascara
  • CARGO The Reverse lip liner (fair-nude skin tone)
  • MAC lipstick in Dubonnet (deep claret red)
  • MAC lipstick in Ladybug (bright true red)

Tools used

  • Posh smudger brush (sponge tip smudger)
  • MAC 239 (business firm bristled eye shader brush)
  • MAC 219 (firm bristled pencil castor)
  • MAC 224 (soft tapered blending castor)
  • MAC 266 (pocket-size angle castor)
  • MAC 187 (duo fiber "skunk" brush)
  • Sephora retractable lip brush

Let's first with the basics

I utilise a thin layer of Urban Decay Primer Potion with my fingers, and let it dry. At present, the secret to doing crazy exaggerrated looks like this 1 is giving yourself a map to follow.

Suspension down the private components of the look, and pay attention to where the lines begin, terminate, and curve. I like to cheat a fiddling and play connect the dots: I use my Urban Decay 24/seven Liner in Cypher to place pocket-sized marks at the outside points of the wing I want to create. This way, I can brand certain I'm happy with the placement before I go and smear ten pounds of black paint on my confront. Here is the basic layout of my fly:

I want this black to be intense, so I'g going to apply a base layer of color by using Zero to shade in the whole shape. You could besides use Blackground Paint Pot or even a shadestick for this step, merely I prefer the Urban Decay pencils as bases considering they're easy to control and blend for precise work like this. With my weapon of choice, I carefully connect the dots to outline the shape of the fly, then use the side of the pencil to shade in i patch at a time. I use my Posh smudger castor to blend the shaded patches together. It at present looks like this:

You don't need to be concerned about uneven color saturation or perfect lines at this point; we'll become over information technology again later. Recall of this equally your rough typhoon wing.

Now for the color!

First, I use my finger to use MAC Paint Pot in Painterly from my crease, upwardly to my browbone, and out to my temple to even out whatsoever discoloration and provide a viscid base for the shadows. With the 239 shader castor, I use MAC Firespot heart shadow starting at my pucker (where the blackness wing ends) and extending a piddling above my countenance and out to my temple, following the curves of the wing. You want to build the color slowly, and alloy out your edges and then the colour fades in to your pare.

Aromaleigh'southward Helterskelter is actually an amazing color, and I highly recommend picking it upward! The technique for using loose mineral shadows is the same as for pigments: use a dumbo, house brush (like the 239 or 252), and "pack" or "dab" the shadow on to your heart rather than swiping it. Work slowly and gently, and you won't take any fallout to clean upwards.

Using my 239 castor, I pat Helterskelter on top of Firespot, concentrating on the inner and outer corners of the shape I've created with the orangish. Then, I pat a tiny bit of Fyrinnae Fool'southward Gilt on acme of Firespot in the center of each browbone, only to brighten up the wait a bit. I blend the three colors and all the outer edges with the 224 blender brush. Use a very light hand here considering you don't want to make the color disappear!

Now let'southward go back and clean upward the black

I add a drop of Duwop Payoff to my Urban Decay Cipher middle shadow pan, and let the liquid sink in. (Payoff is a bully product for getting the wet application look but with much amend staying power!) Using my 219 pencil brush and working slowly, I shade in the black wing and clean upwardly my edges. I wanted to get out it a bit smokey, but you could get over the outer edges with a black gel or pencil liner if you lot prefer a sharper look.

I black out my brows…

…with my 266 angled brush and the Urban Disuse Aught shadow. You want to exaggerate your forehead shape a little scrap, only without making information technology look too fake. The trick is to focus on drawing a sharp line at the bottom of your brows from the inner to the outer corner, and then flick and blend the color up through your brows with your castor.

Dior Iconic Mascara

Final stride is some Dior Iconic Mascara, and we're done with the eyes! This photo is taken with wink to better testify off the colors.

Finishing the look

The remainder of the face is pretty basic. I practice a verrrry low-cal sweep of Helterskelter across my cheekbones with the 187 and alloy well. For the lips, I've mixed two cherry MAC lipsticks to get a glossy, deep ruddy frown. Using the Sephora lip brush, I get-go apply Dubonnet, then gently dab Ladybug on top. When wearing lipstick, I like to acuminate up my lip line past applying a quick swipe of CARGO's The Reverse lip liner all around the edges, and so blending it in. It isn't necessary, but it helps my cerise lips "pop."

Here's the finished look! This is my best disaffected model vacant stare:

Okay, Miss Tyra would totally yell at me for losing my neck, but you take to admit that'southward a pretty violent true cat eye!

Certain, this is in no fashion an everday look, but I still encourage all of you to break out the virtually colorful shadows in your makeup kits and try it out! It doesn't really matter if you just wear information technology around the living room and practice your runway strut for your cats; just think nearly how badass you'll feel with a fearless splash of color on your lids.

On that note, I'd like to leave you with i of my favorite warm and fuzzy quotes about beauty, which just happens to be from Francois Nars: "Follow your instinct. Wear any makes you happy. Mix and blend and mix some more." That may also be my makeup mantra. You don't demand to be a master of blending or own 387 colors of eye shadow; you just need instinct and mental attitude and colors that make yous happy!
